A Quick View of the Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV that was introduced in September of 2017. Its novel Scandinavian design helped it win the European Car of the Year Award the next year and Car of the Year Japan in both 2018 and 2019. The magazine “What Car?” also named the Volvo XC40 Car of the Year in 2018 and 2019. Other manufacturers introduced Scandinavian styling after those years, presenting some competition.

The 2023 models received minor exterior styling updates to the headlights, grille, and bumpers in an effort to simplify the appearance. New trim levels were introduced for 2023 as well. You may find the base-level Core trim adequate if you plan to stay in town. Select the Plus trim, complete with the available Driver Assist package, if you plan to go on longer trips. Regardless of the year or the trim, this five-door vehicle remains the smallest SUV that Volvo makes.

Its design is based on the CMA platform to maximize the interior space. Some people consider the cargo capacity small for the car’s class. However, there are some clever small-item storage solutions that help make up for the lack of space in the back. Outfitted with premium materials, the interior is also pleasing to the eye.

The touchscreen does not have an intuitive interface, but it does come standard with Google Play, Google Assistant, and Google Maps. For 2023, you get up to four years of free digital services, depending on the trim you choose. You can pay for continuation of the services afterward, if desired.

This crossover also comes standard with Volvo Intellisafe, which is an advanced sensory system that prevents the vehicle from running off the road. During various types of car crashes, the seatbelts automatically adjust and the seat frames absorb energy to prevent spine injuries. Other safety features are available for this model. This crossover’s style and clever design characteristics continue to set it apart from other SUVs.

This vehicle comes with either a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. You can get either engine for gas or diesel. For 2023, these engines received a mild hybrid system that boosts fuel economy by 1 mpg.

Volvo introduced the manufacturer’s first electric battery model, the XC40 Recharge, in October of 2019. The automaker plans to have half of its vehicle lineup consisting of electric-powered models by 2025.

You can obtain a Volvo XC40 for well under $40,000. Choose from nine colors, 10 trims, and two packages.
