Interlock Ignition Installation

Interlock Ignition Installation

Interlock ignition installation has become increasingly popular in different parts of the world as jurisdictions look for effective methods to combat drink driving. An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breath analyzer attached to the ignition system of a vehicle, designed to measure the blood alcohol content (BAC) in a driver’s breath. If the BAC surpasses the pre-set limit, usually set at .02%, the device will restrict the vehicle's ignition from starting.

During installation, specialized technicians integrate this relatively small gadget into the vehicle's electrical system whereupon it coalesces with the ignition system. The device comprises a breathalyzer and two important circuits. The first is a start circuit that connects to the ignition switch, while the second is an electrical circuit that is connected to the starter. The interlock device acts as a bridge that links these two circuits.

Once installed, the driver must blow into the device every time he or she wants to start the vehicle. The breathalyzer evaluates the breath sample for alcohol content. If the sample exceeds the limit, the unit disrupts the ignition process, hence preventing the vehicle from starting. For safety reasons, the device does not interfere with the engine when it's already running. However, it does ask for rolling tests at random intervals during a trip to ensure the driver doesn't consume alcohol after the vehicle has been ignited.

To ensure accuracy, the interlock device is strictly regulated and must comply with a set of standards, such as those defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States. Regular calibration, typically every 30-60 days, is also mandatory to ensure the device is functioning properly.

Given the efficacy of these devices and their potential to save lives, many jurisdictions make IIDs a mandatory stipulation for individuals convicted of DUI (Driving Under the Influence) offenses. This proactive strategic approach assists in reducing the repeat-offense rate significantly while ensuring greater public safety on the roads.

Installation of an ignition interlock device, no doubt, makes vehicles safer and roads less dangerous, ultimately aiding in the fight against drink-driving. It represents a tremendous leap forward in vehicular safety technology, marrying the disciplines of road safety, law enforcement and tech innovation. Although it may initially appear to be a somewhat invasive measure, the life-saving potential of the ignition interlock device makes it an important node in the continuous endeavor to improve road safety.
