Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically appears in individuals during childhood and is characterized by various levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Individuals diagnosed with ADHD typically have difficulty focusing and regulating their behaviour, resulting in sometimes severe disruption of their daily life.
There are three types of ADHD; predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive and combined. Predominantly inattentive individuals have difficulty focusing and following directions, and often appear disorganized, careless, and forgetful. Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive individuals may often be overly active or fidgety, talk excessively, and have a difficult time waiting their turn or playing quietly. Those with the combined type of ADHD often have symptoms from both the predominantly inattentive and predominantly hyperactive/impulsive categories.
Symptoms of ADHD can vary depending on the individual, but some frequent ones include:
• Difficulty with sustained attention
• Disorganization
• Trouble in following tasks and directions
• Easily distracted
• Difficulty in planning ahead
• Inability to prioritize tasks
• Fidgeting and inability to remain still
• Difficulty in controlling impulses
• Making careless mistakes
• Impulsively interrupting
• Inability to reflect on actions and consequences
• Poor social skills
If a person is displaying any of these symptoms, they should be assessed for ADHD by a qualified doctor or healthcare professional. They will likely consider other factors that may be causing the symptoms, such as lack of sleep and psychological stress, before making a diagnosis. In mild cases, the symptoms may be managed with strategies such as regular physical activity, responsible sleep habits, and planning. In more severe cases, medication may be prescribed to help manage the symptoms, but not cure the disorder.
It is important to remember that ADHD is a disorder caused by neurological differences, not a lack of discipline or laziness. With the right resources and management strategies, many individuals diagnosed with ADHD are able to lead successful, productive lives.
