Lung Cancer Symptoms

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death, accounting for more than one in four all cancer deaths. Unfortunately, lung cancer can be hard to detect in the early stages. With symptoms such as coughing, coughing up blood, or weight loss, it can often be mistaken for other illnesses or fail to be recognized. Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of lung cancer could help you get a diagnosis sooner which could potentially lead to more successful treatment.

The most common sign of lung cancer is a new, persistent cough. This could be accompanied by other symptoms such as a hoarse voice, difficulty breathing, or chest pain with coughing. Other less common symptoms include coughing up blood, wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest pain when not coughing. Lung cancer can also cause fatigue, loss of appetite, and unintended weight loss.

In some cases, other symptoms may appear before any signs of cough or abnormality in breathing. These may include swelling of the face or neck, a persistent chest infection, pneumonia or bronchitis, or pain in the shoulder or back that doesn't go away.

Although these are common signs of lung cancer, it is important to remember that they can be caused by other medical conditions as well. Therefore, if you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to consult your primary care physician for an accurate diagnosis.

If your doctor suspects lung cancer, he or she may order additional tests to confirm it. These may include a chest x-ray, CT scan, or biopsy. Other tests may include electrocardiogram (ECG), pulmonary angiogram, and blood tests.

By recognizing the symptoms of lung cancer, you may be able to catch it early and seek treatment. If you have any concerns or questions, it is important to speak to your doctor as soon as possible. He or she can answer any questions you may have and provide you with the best treatment course of action.
