I’ve always wanted to go on an Antarctic cruise, but I didn’t have the budget for one of the luxury ships. Fortunately, I found Quark Expeditions. While they do offer fancy-shmancy ships, you can also find smaller vessels for your trip. I’m a yoga instructor whose spirit animal is a whale, so I made sure to book my trip for the late Antarctic summer (which is winter in Boston), so I could make sure to see whales. The Ocean Endeavour had an organic spa which I loved and a juice bar so I didn’t even gain any weight on ...

I am not a rich man. I’ve learned how to live without most luxuries beyond clean water and a car to get to work. That said, for my 40th birthday I wanted to treat myself to a cruise. I thought what could be better than facing the bitter cold on an Antarctic cruise? I found Hurtigurten, who offer cheap Antarctic cruises. While there are no frills on their ships, they do offer extensive trips off the ship to explore Antarctica, which was what I wanted more than some hot rock massage.

I booked my trip with Silversea for a cruise to Antarctica on the Silver Cloud. I spent a lot of money, so I wanted to get my money’s worth. The Silver Cloud has multiple dining choices and a spa so I was able to feel like I was in the lap of luxury. I even opted for the grill one night where you cook steak over a bunch of lava rocks. I love National Geographic so when I was looking for an Antarctic cruise, I knew I had to choose Lindblad Expeditions. They work with NG photographers and experts to not only study Antarctica but also to offer a great experience for nature aficionados like myself. The ship wasn’t too big, but it had a hot tub and massages. My wife and I are academics, so we especially enjoyed the lectures that were offered. There was just so much to do on the ship, we were never bored and we learned a lot.

I took my fiancée on the  17-day Abercrombie and Kent cruise to Antarctica and it was amazing. The trip was all-inclusive, with a spa and salon right on the ship which is called Le Lyrial. Not only was it relaxing and absolutely gorgeous, but it was informative too, and I learned a lot about historical Antarctic expeditions. And don’t let the cold fool you—after eating a good meal at the fine dining restaurant we went back to our suite and cuddled for warmth. If you have the money to spend, I recommend Abercrombie and Kent.
